  • In this course, you’ll leave with your own pair of hand made sneakers and the skills and knowledge to start your shoemaking journey. We provied transferable shoemaking skills for you to apply to your own customs, brands or career. We take no shortcuts in the process to make teaching easier — our methods are based on traditional manufacturing processes for sneakers.

ABOUT OUR TEACHING

Founder of London Sneaker School Thomas Rowe has been making shoes for over 15 years. Starting in a London shoe factory, Thomas also now runs Footwear For Film, producing bespoke footwear for movies and theatre for productions such as Marvel, Star Wars, Harry Potter and many more. Thomas has trained all LSS shoemakers using traditional English cordwainer methods. Our goal is to instil a dedication and understanding of the craft while providing you with transferable skills to go on and hand make any shoe, not just sneakers.

Footwear For Film are located in the same workshop as London Sneaker School and you’ll get the full factory experience.

  • We cater for all skillsets. We will have plenty of time for practice and get you to point where you will feel confident with the process.

  • We have a wide range of materials for you to pick from. You're welcome to source your own leathers and bring them with you. With footwear you can use a lot of different types of materials but some work better than others, for leather please ensure it isn’t too thin or soft/large. It needs to be between 1mm-1.4mm. Cow or horse hides works best. If you want to use fabric or synthetic material it will need a heavier cotton driller backer ironed on. If in doubt bring it with you and we'll take a look.

  • We'll provide everything you'll need on the day. Have a think about your design — on enrolling we'll be in touch to see what you had in mind. We provide all leather, but if you'd like to something you've found yourself you're welcome to.

    Shoemaking is a craft and requires skill and patience, all we ask is you bring a positive attitude to learning and we'll help you with the rest.

  • Yes. We're flexible as long as all workshop fees are paid before the workshop starts. If you'd like to setup a recurring payment running up to your course please get in touch.

  • The age limit is 16 and above.

    If 14 or 15 please get in touch. We have had students as young as 14 that have been more than capable. Although the course does require high levels of concentration as well as handling heavy machinery and knives.

In this course, you’ll leave with your own pair of hand made sneakers and the skills and knowledge to start your shoemaking journey.

We proved transferable shoemaking skills for you to apply to your own customs, brands or career. We take no shortcuts in the process to make teaching easier — our methods are based on traditional manufacturing processes for sneakers.

Our teachers are lead and taught by London Sneaker School founder Thomas J. Rowe. Thomas has been making footwear in London for over 12 years and currently makes shoes for films and productions such as Star Wars, Harry Potter, Marvel and more.

During the class, the LSS team will guide you through the complete shoemaking process — from your design to construction.

You’ll start by designing your dream pair from our wide selection of premium leathers. And we’ll spend the first day working on a practise upper for you get familiar with shoemaking.

Along the way, you’ll receive hands-on tuition from expert shoemakers with plenty of opportunities to ask questions.

By the end of the class you’ll have the skills and knowledge to make sneakers, as well as a pair of 1-of-1, hand made sneakers made and designed by you.

  • Day 1 focuses on honing your skills through mock-up upper practice. This crucial hands-on experience prepares you for crafting your final pair with confidence.

  • On Day 2, immerse yourself in the world of materials and patterns. Begin by perusing our extensive range of premium leathers, each offering a distinct texture and character. Select the perfect leather to bring your sneaker vision to life, understanding the vital interplay between design and material.

    Guided by our experts, you'll then delve into the intricate process of pattern utilization. Lay the selected leather on the pattern templates and trace the outlines meticulously, ensuring accuracy in every contour. This step is critical as it sets the foundation for the entire sneaker construction process.

    With the traced patterns, you'll proceed to the clicking stage—a skill central to shoemaking. Employing traditional techniques, cut the leather precisely along the traced lines, mastering the art of "clicking" to attain consistent, flawless pieces. This stage highlights the fusion of technical expertise and creative expression, as your chosen leather transforms into tangible components of your sneakers.

    Day 2 not only equips you with hands-on experience but also cultivates an appreciation for the synergy between material selection, pattern utilization, and craftsmanship. As you navigate through the tactile process of tracing and clicking, you'll gain an intimate understanding of how these intricate elements harmonize to shape your bespoke sneakers.

  • Day 3 of our course is all about upper construction. Guided by experts, you'll stitch together the clicked leather pieces using industrial sewing machines to create the upper part of your sneaker.

    You'll also delve into skiving, thinning leather edges for comfort and aesthetics. The hum of sewing machines will be your backdrop as your design takes shape. By the end of the day, you'll not only master stitching but also understand how it blends skill and creativity for standout sneaker uppers.

  • Day 4 unfolds the fascinating world of lasting. Guided by our experts, you'll embark on a hands-on journey of stretching the upper material over the shoe last—a mold that determines the sneaker's shape. This tactile experience showcases how materials adapt and conform, bringing your design to life in a tangible way.

    Throughout the day, you'll witness the gradual transformation of your design from a flat pattern to a three-dimensional structure. By day's end, you'll not only grasp the art of lasting, a cornerstone of shoemaking, but also appreciate how it harmonises with design choices, culminating in the creation of exceptional sneakers that embody both form and purpose.

  • Day 5 is about outsole removal and application. Guided by experts, you'll learn to remove existing soles and attach new ones to the recently lasted uppers.

    You'll gain hands-on experience in safely removing old soles and master the technique of precisely attaching new outsoles. By day's end, you'll be well-versed in this pivotal stage of the process, enhancing both the appearance and functionality of your crafted sneakers.

  • With outsoles securely applied, your handcrafted bespoke sneakers are ready to wear. This milestone isn't just an endpoint—it's the start of your shoemaking journey, where each step was a brushstroke in the canvas of your unique creation. From here, your path as a shoemaker unfurls, enriched by the skills, insights, and creativity you've gained. Your crafted sneakers aren't just footwear; they're the embodiment of your dedication and the kickoff of your personal shoemaking journey.
