What
You'LL
LEARN
There are many steps when it comes to hand making shoes with many areas for you to perfect and refine your craft. We'll be running over every step in detail.
  • Leather + materials — knowing the right leather and materials to use when shoemaking is vital. Learn when to use nappa vs cow, how to find bias, what to use, what to avoid and more.
  • Tools + machinery — shoemaking requires a wide range of specialised tools and machinery that you'll use through your 5 days with us.
  • Clicking + tracing — learn to cut leather using the traditional English clicking knife. A knife especially designed to cut perfect curves.
  • Upper assembly — while many shoes follow similar constructions, the upper assembly is always different. Learn the steps and methods used to assemble and stitch your upper.
  • Mass-manufacture vs Hand Made — shoes produced in factories use different methods and materials designed to optimise the volume of production. As a craftsperson, your shoemaking process will follow a slower more considered approach. Learn the differences in process and material between a factory shoe vs the shoe you'll make.
  • Lasting — lasting is a process in which you'll pull your upper on a shoe last to give the upper its 3D form. Learn this age old technique without the use of any expensive machinery.
  • Deconstruction — you'll learn how to remove outsoles from original pairs of shoes to use on your own.
  • Outsole application and finishing— The last step of the process, applying your outsole on to your upper. A fresh pair, hot off the sole press, ready for you to walk home in.

I've never sewn, I've never 'clicked' (cut) leather, I've never lasted. The teaching was so hands-on, so detailed and supportive, I was able to emerge with a great pair of shoes from scratch.
Damon Ma
Couldn’t have done this without the chaps at LSS. They were knowledgeable, experienced and most importantly been very approachable throughout. I would recommend it to anyone interested in making their own sneakers.
Danny Hillman
Made these from scratch. I had never cut leather or used a sewing machine before this so I’m extremely happy with my first reconstruction. Can’t Incredible teaching and hospitality by the LSS team. I would highly recommend it to anyone that wants to get involved in this craft. What a week!

Frequently
Asked
Questions

Where are you based?

We are in Hackney, London.

27b Belfast Road
London N16 6UN

Are the courses suitable for beginners?

We cater for all skillsets. We will have plenty of time for practice and get you to point where you will feel confident with the process.

What leathers do you have? Can I bring my own?

We have a wide range of materials for you to pick from. You're welcome to source your own leathers and bring them with you. With footwear you can use a lot of different types of materials but some work better than others, for leather please ensure it isn’t too thin or soft/large. It needs to be between 1mm-1.4mm. Cow or horse hides works best. If you want to use fabric or synthetic material it will need a heavier cotton driller backer ironed on. If in doubt bring it with you and we'll take a look.

What do I need?

We'll provide everything you'll need on the day. Have a think about your design — on enrolling we'll be in touch to see what you had in mind. We provide all leather, but if you'd like to something you've found yourself you're welcome to.

Shoemaking is a craft and requires skill and patience, all we ask is you bring a positive attitude to learning and we'll help you with the rest.

Can I pay in installments?

Yes. We're flexible as long as all workshop fees are paid before the workshop starts. If you'd like to setup a recurring payment running up to your course please get in touch.

I can't make the workshop date, when is the next workshop?

If you can't make the date of the course then get in touch. We're always adding new courses and happy to give you a heads up on future dates.
